SM Blend Words

A searchable SM word list for blend practice, filterable by syllables and word type.

SM is S into M, as in smile, smoke, and smell. It is a short list, and that is not an oversight. English simply does not have many SM words, so this is all of the common ones rather than a padded count.

How to make the SM blend sound

An S blend is two sounds run together with no vowel between them, which is harder than either sound alone. Children often drop the S (top for stop) or insert a vowel (sutop). Clusters usually come together around age 4 to 5, after the individual sounds are stable.

SM blend sound questions

English has few SM words to begin with. Rather than pad the list with rare or made-up entries, this is every common SM word that passes the sound rules.
