OR Words

A searchable OR word list for vocalic R practice, filterable by syllables and word type.

OR is the vocalic R in horse, corn, and door. The lips round for the oh before the tongue pulls back, so it often feels different to a child than AR even though both end in the same retracted tongue shape.

Sound /ɔɹ/

How to make the OR sound

A vocalic R is R acting as the vowel of the syllable rather than as a consonant, as in car, water, and bird. The tongue shape is the same as consonantal R, but there is no vowel for it to lean on, which is why vocalic R often lingers after initial R is already correct. It commonly is not accurate until age 6 or 7.

OR sound questions

Round the lips for the oh, then pull the tongue back and up for the R without letting the lips relax. The voice stays on throughout.
