ER Words
A searchable ER word list for vocalic R practice, filterable by syllables and word type.
ER is the vocalic R in water, tiger, and finger. It is the most common vocalic R in English by a wide margin, which is why this is the longest list here and why ER is often where vocalic R work starts.

How to make the ER sound
A vocalic R is R acting as the vowel of the syllable rather than as a consonant, as in car, water, and bird. The tongue shape is the same as consonantal R, but there is no vowel for it to lean on, which is why vocalic R often lingers after initial R is already correct. It commonly is not accurate until age 6 or 7.

ER sound questions
In most American English they are the same sound, spelled three ways. They are kept as separate lists because that is how the target is usually taught and searched for, not because they sound different.
