S Words
A searchable S word list you can filter by position, syllables, and word type, built for speech practice.
S is a long, quiet hiss, the sound a snake makes. You hear it in sun, whisper, and bus. It is also the sound behind a lisp, which is why it lands on so many caseloads. Every word here has a single S, so nothing on this list turns into a blend on you.

How to make the S sound
S is a fricative made by pushing a thin stream of air over the tongue tip toward the front teeth, with the voice off. A common error is the lateral or frontal lisp, where air escapes over the sides or between the teeth. Most children produce a clean S by around age 4 to 5.
