R Words
A searchable R word list you can filter by position, syllables, and word type, built for speech practice.
R trips up more kids than any other sound, and it is usually the last one to click. It turns up everywhere: red at the front, carrot in the middle, and car at the end, where R stops acting like a consonant and becomes the vowel itself.

How to make the R sound
R is made with the tongue either bunched or tip-up near the roof of the mouth, without touching it, while the voice is on. It is one of the latest sounds to develop, often not fully mastered until age 6 or 7, and it is a very common therapy target because of how many ways it can be produced.

R sound questions
There are two common ways: bunch the back of the tongue up and back, or lift the tongue tip toward the roof of the mouth. Either way the tongue does not touch, the sides press against the top teeth, and the voice is on.
