The basics

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the exact amount of time since a person’s birth, expressed in years, months, and days. Unlike developmental age, which reflects a child’s skills relative to peers, chronological age is a fixed, objective measure pulled directly from the birth date.

For SLPs this distinction matters enormously. Standardized assessments like the CELF, GFTA, and PPVT sort children into narrow age bands. A calculation error can shift standard scores, alter percentile rankings, and even change whether a child qualifies for services.

Chronological age

A fixed measure of time since birth. Drives assessment norms, eligibility, and age-band lookups.

Developmental age

A snapshot of where a child functions relative to peers across speech, language, cognition, and motor skills.

Do the math

How to calculate chronological age by hand

The calculator does this instantly, but here is the process if you need to explain it or double-check a result.

01

Write the dates

Stack the assessment date above the date of birth in year/month/day columns. Working right-to-left makes borrowing obvious.

02

Subtract days, borrow if needed

If the birth day is greater than the assessment day, borrow 30 days from the months column and subtract.

03

Subtract months, then years

Repeat for months (borrow 12 if needed), then years. The result is the exact chronological age in years, months, and days.

Worked example
Assessment
2026 / 03 / 15
Date of birth
2019 / 08 / 22
Chronological age
6 years, 6 months, 21 days
Days: 15 < 22, borrow 30 days from months → 45 − 22 = 23. Months: (3 − 1) − 8 < 0, borrow 12 → 14 − 8 = 6. Years: (2026 − 1) − 2019 = 6.

Why accurate age math matters for SLPs

Standardized assessments depend on it

CELF, GFTA, and PPVT sort children into age bands as narrow as 3 to 6 months. Falling in the wrong band changes standard scores, percentiles, and eligibility.

Eligibility decisions hinge on it

IEP, ESY, and early-intervention eligibility are pinned to specific age thresholds. One mis-calculated month can flip a qualification.

Clinical reports must be defensible

Accurate age math keeps report data consistent, so administrators, parents, and other providers see one reliable number.

Goal setting becomes realistic

Pairing chronological age with developmental milestones helps you write goals that match where a child actually is.

◉ FAQ

Questions we get about the calculator

A chronological age calculator determines the exact amount of time elapsed since a person’s birth, expressed in years, months, and days. It automates the subtraction process that SLPs and educators would otherwise do by hand, eliminating the borrowing errors that commonly occur with manual calculations.

Ready when you are.

Every report, every IEP meeting, every parent conversation starts with the right number. This calculator is built to give it to you in a second.
