The basics

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the exact amount of time since a person’s birth, expressed in years, months, and days. Unlike developmental age, which reflects a child’s skills relative to peers, chronological age is a fixed, objective measure pulled directly from the birth date.

For SLPs this distinction matters enormously. Standardized assessments like the CELF, GFTA, and PPVT sort children into narrow age bands. A calculation error can shift standard scores, alter percentile rankings, and even change whether a child qualifies for services.

How to calculate chronological age by hand

The calculator does this instantly, but here is the process if you need to explain it or double-check a result.

Write the dates

Stack the assessment date above the date of birth in year/month/day columns. Working right-to-left makes borrowing obvious.

Subtract days, borrow if needed

If the birth day is greater than the assessment day, borrow 30 days from the months column and subtract.

Subtract months, then years

Repeat for months (borrow 12 if needed), then years. The result is the exact chronological age in years, months, and days.

Days: 15 < 22, borrow 30 days from months → 45 − 22 = 23. Months: (3 − 1) − 8 < 0, borrow 12 → 14 − 8 = 6. Years: (2026 − 1) − 2019 = 6.

Some norm tables use total months instead of years and months. The conversion is years times 12, plus the months: a child who is 4;6 is 54 months old. The calculator shows total months with every result so you never do that step in your head.

Publisher rules

Do you round chronological age? Usually, no.

Any calculator can subtract two dates. Test publishers add rules on top of the subtraction, and the one that changes scores is rounding. Pearson, whose catalog includes the CELF, GFTA, PPVT, and WISC, states that ages are not rounded up to the next month or year. A child who is 6 years, 6 months, 29 days is 6;6 for the norm lookup, not 6;7.

A few manuals do call for rounding, so the manual always has the final word. When it says nothing, record the exact years, months, and days and leave them alone.

Write it as 6;3

Reports in speech-language pathology write age as years;months with a semicolon: 6;3 means 6 years, 3 months. Keep the days in your notes even when the report only shows years;months, so anyone reviewing the file can reconstruct the calculation.

The 30-day month

Pearson’s own calculator treats every month as 30 days when it borrows. A hand calculation and a calendar-exact tool can differ by a day or two on the days figure. Both are defensible; the convention in your manual wins.

Prematurity

Corrected age for children born premature

For a child born before 37 weeks, developmental expectations run on corrected age, not chronological age. The formula: corrected age equals chronological age minus the number of weeks the child was born early. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using corrected age for developmental milestones through the first 24 months.

The calculator above handles this for you: check “Born premature,” enter the gestational age at birth, and corrected age appears next to chronological age. Two details worth knowing: well-child visits and immunizations stay on chronological age, and correction stops at 24 months.
